Following the footsteps of Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente began his career north of the border for the Dodgers’ minor league affiliate, Montreal Royals. Although there was an eight-year gap from the time Robinson spent in Montreal (1946) and the year Clemente was there (1954), both men blazed a trail. Robinson, of course, was the first black player to play in the Major Leagues in the 20th Century, and although Clemente was not the first Latino, he was a dark-skinned player proud of his heritage and dedicated to prove that Latin ball players were every bit as good as other major leaguers. The Pittsburgh Pirates saw greatness in Clemente and picked the right fielder in the 1954 Rule 5 draft. Clemente started the 1995 season with the Pirates and played every game of his shortened career with the Bucs. Offered is a 1972 Topps #130 Roberto Clemente “In Action” card that has been beautifully signed in blue ink. Finding any Clemente from the 1972 Topps series is tough, but the “In Action” is significantly more difficult because most autograph collector chose to get his regular card #309 autographed. For autograph enthusiasts, there was about a 7-month span from the time this card was issued until Clemente’s untimely death on December 31, 1972. The card is sharp and has been graded a PSA 7, while the signature has been authenticated by PSA/DNA (#B30986).
