The offered 1920s autographed side-written bat is an eerie representation of the angst-filled history of the Chicago Cubs. Turned during the 1925-1928 labeling period, the Hillerich & Bradsby Charlie Hollocher signature model weapon is symbolic of stellar performances and resultant lofty hopes snuffed out too soon—in this case, an unexplainable bout with depression cut short a sparkling career and, eventually, the player’s life. Pacing the N.L. with 161 hits in his 1918 rookie campaign, Hollocher led the North Siders to that year’s Fall Classic. He continued to perform well in the ensuing years before depression forced him to call it quits on July 23, 1923 (with a .342 average). He returned for the middle portion of the 1924 season but left the big leagues for good on August 20. Still plagued by his demons in 1940, Hollocher shot himself in the throat and ended it all. As for the tested and true war club, the (32.6-oz/34”) white ash model was employed and side-written by another player, as Hollocher never returned to organized baseball at any level after 1924. Just to the left of the center brand, though, Hollocher’s black-ink autograph (signed “From Chas J Hollocher - Chicago Base Ball Club” remains legible (“5” strength) and stands as possibly the only example in the hobby. The bat shows heavy use with checking (and a small slice of missing wood) about the hitting surface, illegible side writing, an 8” handle crack (secured by vintage batboy nails) and chipping about the Hornsby-style knob. Full photo LOA from JSA (for autograph) and auction LOA from John Taube, PSA/DNA (for bat).

According to the full photo LOA from JSA, the side writing is in the hand of Henry Morrow from Hillerich & Bradsby. (The autograph is deemed as Hollacher's.)
