Without question the most celebrated player in Washington Senators history, Walter Johnson was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame’s 1936 inaugural class. Shortly thereafter, the incomparable fireballer appropriately penned this 1939 First Day Cover. Postmarked “Cooperstown 1939,” the cachet celebrates baseball’s 100th anniversary and is vertically signed and inscribed “Best Wishes” by Johnson. While his surname crosses over the postmark, the black-ink fountain pen scripting maintains (“9”) strength and clarity. Full photo LOA from JSA.
There is a handwritten address (in pencil) on the front and a small tear on the envelope's sealing flap.
