For most athletes, the toughest decision is when to admit your best days are behind you and your career is over. One last shot at glory or a chance at redemption is all an aging superstar needs to draw him into one more season: Johnny Unitas with San Diego, Brett Favre with Minnesota or Joe Namath with Los Angeles. Namath had conquered New York with (11) Hall of Fame seasons, and upon his release after the 1976 season, he took his talents to the “City of Angeles.” In the fourth game of the 1977 season, Namath took a beating at Solider Field in Chicago and was benched, never to return to the field. With limited time on the field for the L.A. Rams, the offered game-worn jersey is a scarce item of this beloved Hall of Fame gunslinger. The solid blue jersey mesh style was the preferred garment of the Rams during the mid-to-late 1970s. Thick vinyl yellow numerals with rounded block font are correct in their placement, texture, mil depth, color hue and size. "NAMATH" is screened onto a mesh nameplate in white block lettering. Light use is present, consistent with limited play. A 4” repair is visible near the right shoulder on the front of the jersey. Namath signed the #2 on the front of the jersey in blue marker, grading (“6”). Alterations to the Russell size 48 jersey include a cut at the base of the “V” neck and the removal of fabric at the base of the sleeves, cut off to the Ram’s horn. Accompanying the jersey is a letter written and signed by Namath authenticating the jersey as the one he wore in 1977 and a 1997 Grey Flannel full LOA with matching photographs. The winning bidder can chose to have the item delivered with or without the frame, but there will be a shipping surcharge if the frame is shipped.

Evidence shows the shirt did have the Sand Knit double tags in the lower left front tail. The double tagging was used on Rams jerseys from 1972 through the late 1980s. Evidence that the tags were originally affixed are apparent and in the proper location.

The Namath letter, dated April 14, 1994 reads, Hope all works for you, Joe Namath"
