Description

More than twenty years after Ty Cobb left the diamond for good, his fiery demeanor hadn’t waned in the least, as evidenced by the offered handwritten letter. Penned entirely in Cobb’s hand on a 7-1/8 x 10-1/2” sheet of his personal stationery, the correspondence is dated “Nov-30th-48” and is accented by his blue-ink fountain pen signature. Complete with traditional paraph, Cobb’s signature projects (“8”) strength and clarity. As for the letter’s contents, Cobb begins by telling the recipient (“Helene”) that he is alone because he fired his housekeeper. He goes on to detail his purchase of a new Cadillac (which is no coincidence, as Cobb made sizable and profitable investments in both General Motors and Coca-Cola). Full photo LOA from JSA.

The letter reads (in full):

Dear Helene:
Am here alone, house keeper fired – been back to Detroit to get a Fleetwood model 60 Cadillac, had a tough time through Nebraska in the snow.
Tom McClure o.k. but a little off. Have been through so much, business,
illegible, divorce of little Jim, LaPointe etc, but will be o.k. also deaths in family.
Send me Alfred J. Beneridges Thomas Jefferson, 3 volumes also statement.
Enjoyed Farleys book. Have not written in my hand for some time, at present not feeling well.

(signed) Ty Cobb
