While Mickey Mantle autographs are valued regardless of the medium, the offered surface can be called “money” in terms of unusual canvases. Specifically, this Mantle signed check was drawn from his personal account, making it a decidedly rare and seldom seen artifact. Composed on June 6, 1979, the document is drawn from Mantle’s account at Georgia’s Rossville Bank in the amount of “$2.00.” The date, dollar amount and recipient’s name are all typewritten. But on the appropriate line, Mantle’s blue ballpoint signature is the real deal, projecting (“8-9”) strength and clarity with the familiar looping upper-case “M”’s. The top of the check features a golf design and lists Mantle’s Dallas, Texas home address. As for the dollar amount, Mantle reportedly wrote $2.00 checks for all (18) of the people who individually sponsored the holes at a Dallas golf course that day. Cashed or uncashed (such as this particular check), some have surfaced over the years, some have not. The check has a vertical fold and is blank on the reverse.
