Proudly offered is an astounding 1953-54 Briggs Meats Willie Mays/Don Mueller panel. Having survived the lethal combination of an anxious mother or zealous kid, this neatly extracted 5-1/2 x 4-1/4” keepsake is one of the only confirmed in the hobby. Published by the Washington D.C. area food manufacturer, subjects were limited to members of the Senators, Yankees and Giants. Of the few panels that have endured the decades, virtually none depicts a Hall of Famer, let alone an icon such as Willie Mays. An approximately 4-1/2” crease spans the lower portion of the cardboard and barely impacts the facsimile autographs. An additional hairline crease is located in the red portion between the vibrant portraits, and an additional wrinkle is discernable to the left of Mueller’s cap. A wafer-thin wax coating has preserved this keepsake from significant staining or soiling. The blank reverse displays faint grease impressions of the original contents. While significant paper loss along the upper, left and right edges is also noticeable, the surface and its precious images are not compromised. Multiple creases and surface wrinkles do not protrude the obverse. As “the home of the regional baseball card,” Huggins & Scott has handled 200+ lots of Briggs and Esskay items. However, this is the first occasion that a panel featuring a youthful “Say Hey” has surfaced.
