A well-traveled backstop at various levels from Battle Creek to Boston, former star Grover Hartley employed this side written bat during the 1921 spring training session with the American Association’s Columbus Senators. Turned by Hillerich & Bradsby, the uncracked (37.4-oz/34-1/4”) weapon features no center brand or identifiers other than block-letter stampings of “HARTLEY” on the barrel, knob and barrel end. Heavy use shows with surface marks throughout. On the hitting surface, grease pencil notations read “Grover Hartley 2 28 21 Columbus Ohio.” This was the normal procedure when players wanted H&B to produce additional models.
